To continue sharing our story on how Matt and I started selling "Vookies" in under a month, during the holidays in NY we went to a coffee place called Book Revue in Huntington Village. Matt spoke to the owner (who happened to be Latin), and he asked him if we could start selling our alfajores in his shop. He agreed and we decided to take free samples there first. That night we created the name of the brand and made the first batch to take them to the coffee shop the next day.
My boyfriend came up with the name “Vookies” (Venezuela + cookies) since I’m from that country. As part of our social input, Matt and I decided to donate a percentage of the profits to help the people in Venezuela who are going through a political, economic and social crisis. We stayed up that night making the alfajores and handmade labels for the packages.
Early morning, the next day we took this first batch of Vookies to Book Revue. Matt and I set up a nice white tray with 25 of our caramel and chocolate Vookies on the counter.
We sat down on a nearby table to do a marketing research based on people’s reaction. People’s feedback was amazing! So amazing that after trying the free samples, people were actually asking to buy them.
We had to improvise and set up little packages of 5 Vookies each on the counter so people could buy them. Due to the success of Vookies, the owner of the coffee shop agreed to buy us more alfajores for the next day. We received our first order, and that night we had to make more batches of Vookies as part of the business.
We finished making the new batches of Vookies around 2 am and we were getting ready to sell them the next morning. We couldn't believe our first business together had officially started!
Mariana graduated from Communications & Journalism in Caracas, Venezuela, and has over 10 years of experience as a writer. She has worked on Digital Marketing, and for over 10 prestigious Cable Television Channels aired in Latin America. Matt graduated from Cornell University in New York. He started his own company in 2010, and has been running it by himself since then. Matt is an expert in Marketing, Sales, and creating 6-Figure Funnels for online businesses.
Over the past year we decided to start a company together and created "Vookies", that later expanded and became "Be Breader". We have been helping celiacs around the world to optimize and improve their health by incorporating safe and delicious meals into their daily menus.
