It’s not a secret for anyone that going food shopping can be sometimes an annoying routine to do. It is a routine because we have to frequently go to food stores to get the food that we are going to cook and eat in our meals. When you are celiac, going food shopping can be even more annoying for 2 reasons, the first one is because the gluten-free products are more expensive than the ones that aren’t, and the second reason is that finding gluten-free food is not easy. How many times have you stopped at a supermarket hoping to make your shopping quickly, but you leave 30 minutes later with your hands empty (and cranky) because you didn’t find any of the products you were looking for. That situation has happened hundreds of times to Matt and me when we have gone to random stores we don't know to buy food. Shopping somewhere unknown certainly frustrates us because we end up spending more time trying to look for what we want, than actually finding everything in one place. As I have said before, an important step for celiacs is to always plan everything, and as part of that planning process, you should consider being familiar with the best food stores options around your neighborhood so you can get your food shopping done in a more efficient way, and not spend so much time looking for unknown places to buy food. Since Matt and I realized we were spending too much time going to supermarkets in NY for buying our groceries, we decided to write down every time we went to the store, and how much money we were spending there. After the first month doing so (last December), we realized that a very significant part of our time was destined to going food shopping. 20 were the times we went to a food store to get something last month. Even going and getting just a bottle of water, we considered that one ride to the store. Going 20 times a month to a food store is crazy, it is almost like going every day. We have other priorities and more important things to do than going to the supermarket 20 times per month, but the problem was that we didn’t realize it until we started writing it down, and that's what led us to plan how to solve that problem. We try making one big food shopping and buy everything we will be needing for the month to avoid spending time on that later, but let’s face it, sometimes we have cravings and we just want to buy a specific ingredient that is missing from our kitchen. Part of that time spent on food shopping was due to the fact that we recently moved to New York and we didn’t really know the stores around the neighborhood. We would literally go to all the food stores we saw in order to do our gluten-free shopping. But after visiting some places and calling others, now we go straight to the ones we know have the best celiac safe options and we no longer waste our time. If you are celiac and live in NY, you may be wondering where to buy gluten-free food, and that’s exactly what we are going to share with you right now, the best places for you to buy celiac safe products in New York.
Matt and I’s favorite food store is Wild by Nature.
They are a family-owned natural marketplace dedicated to provide since 1994, a wide variety of fresh and delicious organic and natural products for customers in NY.
I consider this the most complete supermarket in terms of gluten-free food.
Every time Matt and I can’t find a product in any food store, we go to Wild by Nature because we know they have it.
When we first moved together to NY, we used to live closer to Huntington’s location so we would always go there and buy anything we needed. Now we live a little further away but we still go there to get whatever we need.
If you are celiac, you may be interested to know that in the Huntington’s location these are some of the following gluten-free food brands they sell:
Some other locations you might wanna visit if you live in NY are East Setauket, Hampton Bays, Oceanside, West Islip and of course Huntington.
If you live in Huntington, NY you can’t miss the opportunity of visiting this bakery.
In the heart of Huntington’s Village, you will find this amazing dedicated gluten-free bake shop Wild Flours. Yes, everything they make is gluten-free so you won’t find cross-contamination at all.
For making their food they use the healthiest and high-quality ingredients that are trustworthy and completely safe for celiacs.
My husband Matt is very sensitive to gluten, and every time he eats something from that bake shop he feels good, no stomach aches at all.
I know how difficult it can be for celiacs to find safe cakes and pastries that won’t bother them, but if you live near Huntington, don’t forget to get your desserts from Wild Flours.
We visit the shop once in a while so Matt can eat a delicious safe dessert.
They also personalize their cakes for you, and that's another reason why we got my birthday cake and some other ones for special occasions we have had.
Matt and I do our food shopping in Stop & Shop. Almost everything we need for our gluten-free meals, we find them there except for some things that we go get somewhere else.
This supermarket chain offers a variety of gluten-free products that make our food shopping very easy.
They are located in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and New York.
You can find gluten-free food brands like:
Against the Grain's bagels is the gluten-free food product that Matt and I eat the most. We eat them every single morning for breakfast.
When we first moved into Huntington we would buy them all the time in Wild by Nature, but when we moved further away, the closest Stop & Shop to our new place didn't have them.
So we talked to their Customers Services department and filed a request to see if they could start selling Against the Grain's bagels in that location.
A couple of days later they started selling them and we haven't stopped buying them!
So besides offering a lot of gluten-free brands, they also consider and take serious, customers' requests.
I didn’t know Trader Joe’s until a couple of weeks ago when Matt and I were driving and we found one near our neighborhood.
